“Smart Tool CAM” project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme –INNOSUP under grant agreement No 101005711

Overview

The SmartToolCAM project addresses a critical challenge in the metal machining industry: the need for flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) capable of adapting to changing production requirements and conditions. These variations often lead to issues like unplanned production stops due to tool breakage or increased costs from producing parts of insufficient quality. SmartToolCAM focuses on deploying a sensory tool system to tackle these problems.

Sensory tool systems, at the forefront of modernizing manufacturing processes, provide real time data collection and analysis, offering deep insights into the cutting process. They enable continuous refinement and optimization of manufacturing operations through data-driven approaches, ensuring precision and consistency with high-fidelity process monitoring and enhancing efficiency by automating adjustments during the cutting process. These systems are particularly beneficial in environments with high production variability, such as High-Mix Low Volume (HMLV) settings.

Despite their potential benefits, the adoption of sensory tool systems has been slow due to the lack of established workflows for integrating smart tools between Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems and actual production processes. To overcome these challenges, SmartToolCAM developed a comprehensive solution that integrates sensory tool systems into existing manufacturing environments rather than using them in isolation. The key innovative element of our solution is the integration of the sensory tool system setup into the CAM environment, streamlining their use by facilitating the use of smart tools through automatic G code generation, thus reducing manual intervention and errors.

The project demonstrates that integrating sensory tool systems with digital twin technology and advanced CAM setups can significantly improve the flexibility and adaptability of metal cutting operations. By addressing the barriers to adoption and providing a clear pathway for implementation, our solution paves the way for smarter, more efficient manufacturing processes. Using Siemens NX ensures the solution is practical, scalable, and aligned with industry standards, making it a valuable addition to any HMLV manufacturing environment.

The results of SmartToolCAM allow for the quick and sustainable production of metal parts, transforming how manufacturing processes are monitored and optimized. This technology can also be extended to other industries where precise and adaptive machining is critical, such as aerospace, medical, micro, and precision engineering.
